Unanimous Decision: UNESCO Inscribes "Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan" in Nakhon Si Thammarat as World Heritage Site On July 25, 2026, at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee in Busan, South Korea, Thailand's agenda to nominate a new cultural heritage site for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List was pushed forward. "Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat" was presented for consideration by the World Heritage Committee, highlighting its outstanding universal value as an architectural masterpiece reflecting history, cultural exchange, and artistic traditions in Southeast Asia, as well as its living cultural heritage evident in the long-standing tradition of the "Phaeng Pha Khuen That" (carrying cloth up to the pagoda). The World Heritage Committee unanimously approved the inscription of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat as a new cultural World Heritage site. This marks a significant achievement for Thailand, with its national artistic and cultural heritage being recognized and celebrated internationally. Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is a first-class royal temple, a Woramahawihan type, located in the heart of Nakhon Si Thammarat city. The area is situated on a long sand dune. Running in a north-south direction, the area is known as "Hat Sai Kaeo." In ancient times, this temple was called "Wat Phra Borom That" or "Wat Phra That," serving as the central Buddhist sanctuary of the city. It was considered a sacred area with no resident monks, but monks from surrounding temples were assigned the responsibility of caring for the Phra Maha That Chedi. The city's ruler, along with respected senior monks, would periodically renovate and restore it. Then, in 1915, King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) visited Nakhon Si Thammarat and graciously appointed Prince Yukhonthikhamphorn, the Viceroy of the Southern Region, to invite Phra Khru Winayathorn from Wat Phetcharik to be the abbot of the temple. Since then, the temple has had a resident abbot and monks. On this occasion, the King bestowed the name "Wat Phra Maha That Woramahawihan" upon the temple. It is believed that the Phra Maha That Chedi of Nakhon Si Thammarat was built during the time of the ancient city of Phra Wiang. Located approximately 500 meters north of the ancient city walls of Phra Wiang, the Phra Mahathat Chedi may have once served as an Aranyavasi (forest monastery) outside the city walls, following the tradition inherited from Sri Lanka. Later, the ancient city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, located north of Phra Wiang, grew and replaced it, placing the Phra Mahathat Chedi within the ancient city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, which served as a center from the Ayutthaya period onwards and was also an important city of the Ayutthaya Kingdom. Due to the temple's location on a narrow, elongated sand dune running in a north-south direction, the main structures of the temple in the early period were built along a north-south axis, adapting to the topography. During the Ayutthaya period, the Phra Mahathat Chedi and its surrounding area showed significant development, including the construction and restoration of several religious structures in the Ayutthaya architectural style, such as the Viharn Phra Song Ma (Horse-Riding Viharn), Viharn Khian (Painted Viharn), Viharn Thammasala (Dharma Hall), cloisters, smaller stupas, and the main viharn, as well as restorations of the Phra Mahathat Chedi by the kings of Ayutthaya. Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan is a World Heritage Site under the criteria of outstanding universal value. This site provides evidence of the fusion of Brahmanism, Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism, and Theravada Buddhism, with influences originating from Pala art in Nalanda, Central Java, Sri Lanka, and the Mon people of southern Myanmar. It influenced religious sites in Thailand, Malaysia, and other areas in Central and Southeast Asia, showcasing art, architecture, religious traditions, and local influences on buildings in the region, meeting the criteria for World Heritage status.
