A Year of Controversy and Absences: Hispano-Breton Competition in San Mateo 2025 (Cantabria): Today, at the San Mateo Fair in Reinosa, the classic Hispano-Breton breed competition was embroiled in one of the most controversial editions in living memory. This year, unlike previous years, only animals with a Hispano-Breton pedigree were allowed to participate, excluding purebred Bretons, which until now had also competed. This has drastically reduced the number of participants, dropping from around 100 animals to fewer than 40, and has affected the overall quality of the competition. Many important breeders, whose Breton animals used to excel, were unable to participate this year due to this new restriction decided at the association's last meeting. As a result, some sections didn't even reach the minimum number of participants, and there was no stallion section, something unprecedented in the show's recent history. It's worth noting that, despite strongly disagreeing with the decision to exclude Bretons, Ganadería Álvaro Rodríguez was the breed that presented the most horses (14) in an attempt to save the event. Without those 14 horses, the show wouldn't have even reached 30, an absolute disaster.
