Markus's kumquat is a true heirloom, but this year it's not looking good: yellow leaves (chlorosis) and hardly any energy left. In this video, Markus shows you the ultimate "spring treatment" for citrus plants. We give the patient new root space, the right soil, and the appropriate fertilizer! The problems: Why is the kumquat turning yellow? Leaching: Heavy summer rains washed all the nutrients out of the pot. PH level: Citrus needs slightly acidic soil (pH 5.8). If the pH rises, iron and magnesium become locked up – the plant can no longer access them, and the leaves turn yellow. Lack of space: The pot was completely filled with roots, leaving the plant no chance to draw on fresh energy. Step-by-step: The citrus wellness program The new pot: We use a 50-liter plastic pot. It's lightweight and retains moisture longer than clay – an important compromise for large patio plants. Drainage: A layer of natural pumice (volcanic rock) prevents waterlogging and ensures oxygen reaches the roots. The right soil: We use a peat-free specialty potting mix for Mediterranean plants. Important: Structural stability is achieved with lava or clay granules to prevent the soil from compacting. Root pruning: Don't worry! Loosening and trimming the root ball stimulates new growth. Pruning & Fertilizing: Prune back about a third of the top. Fertilize with a special citrus fertilizer (high in nitrogen and potassium, low in phosphorus!) to maintain a stable pH level.
