Today we are exploring Morimondo, a quiet medieval borgo just outside Milan, famous for its stunning Cistercian Abbey. The Cistercian monks actually set up a dedicated brickworks kilns on-site to build it, creating a unique, warm architectural masterpiece. -The "Dead World" Name: The name Morimondo doesn't mean "Death of the world" as it sounds in Italian. It actually derives from the French Morimond, the mother abbey in France from which the founding monks arrived. In the local dialect, it came to symbolize a place to "die to the worldly distractions" to live in spiritual peace. -A Smart Grid Ahead of Its Time: Back in the 12th century, the monks engineered an incredibly advanced system of canals, mills, and agricultural grids around the Ticino valley.
