Infinity: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Band by Óscar Navarro
Texas Premiere Infinity: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Band (2023) by Óscar Navarro (b. 1981) Óscar Navarro’s Infinity is a 21-minute, one-movement concerto for alto saxophone and wind band that highlights the instrument’s remarkable expressive range. The work moves fluidly between lyrical, jazz-influenced, cinematic, and virtuosic styles, reflecting Navarro’s view of the saxophone as an instrument of limitless possibility. The piece unfolds in continuous, organically connected sections rather than traditional movements. Listeners encounter warm melodic writing, rhythmically driven passages, jazz-like grooves, waltz-tinged moments, expressive cadenzas, and powerful full-ensemble climaxes. While the saxophone leads the narrative, the wind band plays a vibrant and integral role, offering colorful textures, dynamic contrast, and energetic interplay with the soloist. Now widely performed, Infinity has become a significant contemporary concerto, showcasing both the versatility of the alto saxophone and the expressive potential of the modern wind ensemble.
