Tradition (and Laura) tells us that the Virgin Mary appeared to some shepherds on May 28, 1246, in a juniper tree outside Moral de Hornuez. They took her to the village, but the Virgin returned to the same tree. So they built a small hermitage for her on that very spot where she had appeared. Later, between 1768 and 1774, the current hermitage was built in the Renaissance style, with a Greek cross floor plan and a large central dome, which features the Virgin Mary on a juniper tree on its central altar. The Sanctuary is located in a privileged setting surrounded by centuries-old juniper trees and was declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 1995. Many villages make a pilgrimage there every last Sunday in May.
