Murcia is a Spanish city, the capital of the municipality of the same name and of the autonomous community of the Region of Murcia. It is the center of the Huerta de Murcia region and its metropolitan area. It is located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula on the banks of the Segura River, in the so-called Murcian pre-coastal depression, 40 kilometers from the Mediterranean Sea. With 447,182 inhabitants (INE, 2018), Murcia is the seventh most populated municipality in Spain. The city's urban area (or metropolitan area), although not officially established, comprises approximately ten municipalities in the Region of Murcia, with a population of 650,468 in 2018, spread over a total area of 1,230.92 km2, with a population density of 528 inhabitants/km2. Thus, the urban area of Murcia would occupy 10th place on the list of metropolitan areas in Spain. Murcia is an important service municipality where the tertiary sector has replaced its former status as a quintessential agricultural exporter, thanks to its famous and fertile orchard, for which it was nicknamed the Garden of Europe. Among its most notable industries are the food, textile, chemical, distilling, and furniture and construction materials industries, many of which are located in the West Industrial Park, considered one of the largest in the peninsula (shared with the municipality of Alcantarilla).
