We Need To Talk About Our Obsession Reaction

I am are talking about the comments on our Obsession reaction, but we are also going to breathe through it like adults who maybe need a group session and a snack afterward. After reading the comments and sitting with everything, I understand why some people felt like our first watch came off like victim blaming. In the moment, we were reacting to Nikki as the immediate horror presence because she scared us. That was our honest first watch fear reaction. But looking back, we should have made it much clearer that Bear’s wish is what takes away Nikki’s agency and creates the situation in the first place. Nikki can be terrifying in the movie and still be a victim of what Bear did. Both things can be true. I do not think Bear is innocent. I do not think Nikki deserved what happened to her. And I would never knowingly root for a man who is hurting a woman. But I also think first watch reactions are messy, emotional, imperfect, loud, sweaty, and sometimes just two people screaming at a demon girl before their brains catch up to the full metaphor. That does not mean I am afraid to take accountability. If we missed something important, I can say that. And with Obsession, I do think we under discussed Bear’s responsibility and the way the movie deals with control, agency, obsession, and what happens when someone’s feelings are no longer fully their own. This video is me explaining where I was coming from, what I understand now, and why I still believe movies can hit different people in different ways. Not every viewer is going to have the same reaction at the exact same time, and honestly, that is part of what makes movie reactions interesting. Nobody wants every single reaction video to be the same person saying the same thing in the same tone with the same perfectly prepared analysis. Sometimes you catch the whole meaning of a movie right away. Sometimes you process the fear first and the deeper themes after. Sometimes you miss something, and then people point it out, and you go, “Okay, I hear you.” So no, this is not me saying criticism is not allowed. It is also not me saying we are terrible reviewers because we did not fully unpack Bear’s villain era in the first reaction.
