DE MAZATLAN A DURANGO POR EL BALUARTE Y SUS MAS DE 60 TUNELES OTRO MUNDO
The final night of International Motorcycle Week still vibrates in my memory. The Mazatlán boardwalk is a distant memory, filled with roaring engines, chrome lights reflecting on the Pacific, and thousands of motorcyclists celebrating freedom on two wheels. But at dawn the next day, the real adventure begins: the return trip by motorcycle to Durango, crossing the legendary Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range. The helmet adjusts, the gloves grip the handlebars, and the engine awakens with that deep sound felt more in the chest than in the ears. The city is still asleep when the caravan of motorcycles hits the highway. The salty ocean air accompanies the first few kilometers as the sun paints the Sinaloa coast orange. Little by little, the road begins to climb. The straightaway disappears, and the endless curves of the Durango-Mazatlán Highway appear. For a motorcyclist, the Sierra Madre isn't just traveled through; it's experienced. Every curve demands precision, every lean ignites adrenaline, and every stretch reveals landscapes that seem impossible. Then the tunnels appear. More than sixty tunnels pierce the mountain, one after another, like doorways to another dimension. Entering them on a motorcycle is a unique experience. The roar of the exhaust reverberates off the concrete walls and multiplies until it sounds like hundreds of motorcycles advancing simultaneously. Emerging from each tunnel, the light hits the helmet visor again, revealing immense canyons shrouded in mist. The contrast between darkness and open landscape makes each stretch feel cinematic. There are moments when the caravan stops at the makeshift viewpoints along the roadside. The motorcyclists dismount, stretch their legs, and contemplate the ocean of mountains extending to the horizon. Some laugh, sharing anecdotes from Motorcycle Week; others simply observe in silence, enjoying the immensity of the Sierra Madre Occidental. But nothing prepares you for the moment the imposing Baluarte Bicentenario Bridge appears. From afar, its enormous pillars emerge from the mountains like a futuristic structure suspended in mid-air. As the motorcycle approaches, the wind shifts, and the sensation of height becomes real. Crossing the bridge on a motorcycle is unforgettable. The cable-stayed bridges rise gigantically toward the sky while below, an immense ravine opens up. The engine vibrates beneath the rider's body, and the wind pounds against their chest. On either side, the mountain range seems endless. For a few seconds, the motorcyclist feels as if they are no longer touching the ground. There are no horns, no city, no rush. Only the constant sound of the engine, the echo of the wind, and the absolute freedom of riding among the mountains. After the bridge, the route continues toward the heights of Durango. The climate changes dramatically: the humid heat of Mazatlán is left behind, and the cool mountain air appears. The scent of the sea transforms into the aroma of pine and damp earth. The motorcycles continue along perfect curves, as if the road had been designed exclusively for those who love riding on two wheels. When Durango finally appears at the end of the road, the journey leaves behind more than just kilometers traveled. It leaves you with the feeling of having traversed one of the most spectacular routes in Mexico, where biker camaraderie, the mountains, and freedom become one and the same.
