What do the hanty know about surviving in the extreme cold of Siberia?

The hanty are an indigenous Finno-Ugric people of Western Siberia, traditionally living in the Khanty-Mansi and Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrugs. The main traditional occupations are: -Fishing: The main source of food. Practiced widely on the Ob and Irtysh rivers and their tributaries. The main fishing methods are nets, snares, and spears. -Hunting: Fur trapping (squirrel, sable), forest and waterfowl, as well as elk and deer, formed an important part of the diet. -Reindeer herding: The key occupation of the northern Khanty, providing them with transportation, clothing, and housing materials. Depending on the season and region of residence (tundra, taiga), the Khanty use different types of dwellings: chum (tent), permanent houses, and seasonal structures. Women make clothing from reindeer hides, fur, and cloth, richly decorated with beads, which in Khanty (as in Mansi) mean "small stone." Craftswomen are skilled in ornamentation techniques and fur mosaics. The Khanty maintain traditional beliefs—animism and shamanism. Sacred holidays, such as Raven's Day, symbolizing the arrival of spring, are of great significance. #Survival #nature #Challenge
