We look back at Hillary Clinton’s speech as First Lady at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, on September 5, 1995. Attendees representing 189 countries gave her a thunderous ovation after she proclaimed : “If there is one message that echoes forth from this Conference, let it be that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights, once and for all” The sentiment, “women’s rights are human rights,” never had been voiced so prominently to a global audience and was immediately embraced as an international rallying cry for gender equality.
