This is why Load ACTUALLY is so (dis)liked | Metallica reaction
Metallica’s Load might just be the most misunderstood album in metal history. Released on June 4, 1996, in the aftermath of the Black Album’s unprecedented success, Load marked a radical departure for the band — musically, visually, and emotionally. Gone were the thrash riffs and barked vocals, replaced by sludgy grooves, personal lyrics, and enough controversy to divide the fanbase for decades. And yet, decades later, Load is starting to get the recognition it deserves. In this full episode of the Do You Want Heavy?! series, we take a deep dive into everything behind Load — from the intense pressure following Metallica’s rise to global superstardom, to the abandoned double-album concept that eventually became Reload. We’ll talk about the band’s studio experimentation, the now-infamous “78:59” runtime that forced the band to cut the final minute of The Outlaw Torn, and how Metallica used E♭ tuning, slide guitar, and even a talk box to create an entirely new sound. We’ll also explore the cover art scandal around Andres Serrano’s “Semen and Blood III,” the band’s visual transformation that sparked fan outrage, and how Hetfield himself felt completely disconnected from the aesthetics of the Load era. Despite its criticism, Load debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, went 5× platinum in the U.S., and has slowly become one of the most re-evaluated albums in Metallica’s entire discography. And now, with the official announcement of the Load Deluxe Remaster and over 1800 minutes of archival material on the way, it’s the perfect time to revisit this beast of a record and ask whether Metallica’s most hated album might also be one of their most important. What’s your favorite deep cut from Load? Has your opinion on the album changed over the years? Let’s talk in the comments. 00:00 - Intro 00:50 - Black Album aftermath 03:36 - Twin Turbos 05:23 - No Thrash... no problem 10:37 - Artwork 13:08 - (Not) a failure 15:46 - Verdict -------- 🤘 Become a Patreon and support the show - / metal_pilgrim ...or become a YouTube Channel Member - / @metalpilgrim THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT! 👕 Metal Pilgrim merch for your next concert - https://metalpilgrim.net/ 📷 Instagram - / metal_pilgrim 👍 Facebook - / metalpilgrimofficial 🆇 Twitter/X - https://x.com/MetalPilgrimOFC 🤖 Discord - / discord 🎶 Metal 365 Playlist - https://metalpilgrim.net/Metal365 🇺🇦 Support our volunteer efforts here on the ground in Ukraine by donating to Steel Wings Foundation (I am the founder and personally responsible for every penny spent) - https://steelwings.net/en/ -------- Background music: "Uberpunch" Alexander Nakarada (serpentsoundstudios.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License -------- All content falls under fair use: any copying of copyrighted material done for a limited and “transformative” purpose, such as to comment upon, criticize, or parody a copyrighted work.
