The 26-Minute Dogfight of Chuck Yeager — How an American P-51 Mustang Survived Superior Numbers

How Chuck Yeager Became Ace in a Day Over Germany One Mustang pilot. Twenty-two German fighters. And five victories in nine minutes. SUMMARY This documentary tells the story of Chuck Yeager — the young American P-51 Mustang pilot who became an ace in a single day over Germany. Before he became the man who broke the sound barrier, Yeager was a boy from Hamlin, West Virginia, raised without electricity, running water, or any connection to aviation. He became an aircraft mechanic first, then entered flight training through the Flying Sergeants program when the Army Air Forces needed pilots. By early 1944, he was flying P-51 Mustangs with the 357th Fighter Group in England. Then his war almost ended. On March 5, 1944, Yeager was shot down over occupied France. Wounded and alone, he was rescued by the French Resistance, moved through safe houses, and guided across the Pyrenees into Spain. Because he had contact with the Maquis, regulations said he could never fly combat again. Yeager refused to accept that. He appealed directly to General Dwight D. Eisenhower and asked to return to the fight. Eisenhower approved it. On October 12, 1944, over Steinhuder Meer in northern Germany, Yeager spotted 22 Bf 109s heading toward American bombers. Instead of waiting, he stalked them from behind and attacked. Two German pilots collided before he even fired. A third went down in flames. A fourth was destroyed at point-blank range. A fifth crashed into the ground after a high-speed chase. In one mission, Yeager became Ace in a Day. He would later shoot down one of the first German Me 262 jets, finish the war with 11.5 victories, and go on to break the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. This is the story of the pilot who was not supposed to be in the sky — and the day he proved why he belonged there.
