Umberto Eco 一 «Noi siamo la nostra memoria. Quando morirò, ricorderò tutto»
Davide Ferrario's video installation at the 2015 Venice Biennale, starring Umberto Eco (who passed away on February 19, 2016), is titled "On Memory" and was presented as part of Codice Italia, the Italian Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale (curated by Vincenzo Trione). It is a three-part video interview, filmed in January 2015 at Eco's Milanese home. On that occasion, the semiologist answered questions from Hans Ulrich Obrist (as shown in the transcript in the exhibition catalog, published by Bompiani). In an initial version of Ferrario's film-essay, the interview format was retained, interrupted by archival materials. In the final version, by choice of the curator and Obrist, only Eco is seen, reflecting on the role and space of memory, the theme around which the Italian Pavilion revolved. It was the first time the professor—who has always been sensitive to contemporary art—became the protagonist of a video installation. And it was the first time he "went" to the Biennale. His last public appearance. In the epilogue of this confession, Eco says: "When I die, I will remember everything." Directed by: Davide Ferrario; edited by: Cristina Sardo; filmed by: Andrea Zanoli; sound: Vito Martinelli; music: Fabio Barovero; drum score: Mattia Barbieri; produced by: Fabio Barovero.
