King Milinda asks Arahant Nagasena, “Lord Nagasena, did the Blessed One say that there is no place in the world to escape this death in the sky or in the sea or in an opening in the mountains? The Blessed One again said, Pirith, Dhajagga Pirith, Aataanaatiya Pirith, Angulimala Pirith These are not two statements. May you solve this dilemma! ” Arahant Nagasena said: “Your Majesty, the Blessed One said both these statements. The Pirith Blessed One spoke to the one who has survived, who is old, and who is not covered by evil deeds. Your Majesty, a person whose life is over has no action or strategy to survive. Watering a dead tree seems to be useless. It is as if water were of no use to the fermented crop. But even young water-grown young crops grow out of water. Also, a person who has passed away cannot recover from the Pirith. But some people are prescribed pirith for their survival, whether they are alive or old. They also grow from medicinal pirithas.
