CARTOON EVOLUTION #44 - GARFIELD Launching in 1976 in a local newspaper, within a matter of years, Garfield exploded into the mainstream – almost immediately becoming one of the most well-known and most beloved Comic strip characters of all time. Garfield quickly became a merchandising behemoth, rivalled only by Mickey Mouse, Bugs Bunny, and Snoopy for popularity. Making the jump to the screen, Garfield would go on to star in a dozen animated specials, three television series, and three big-screen adventures. To celebrate almost 50 years of the Monday-hating cat, I’ll trace his entire Evolution from 1976 to now, covering his history and inception and covering his many appearances and changes over the years.
