Designed as an easy-to-learn international auxiliary language to foster global communication and understanding, Esperanto features a highly regular grammar with only 16 basic rules, no exceptions, and a logical structure that draws vocabulary primarily from Romance and Germanic languages with some Slavic influences. The language uses a phonetic alphabet where each letter represents exactly one sound, making pronunciation straightforward, and employs a systematic approach to word formation through prefixes, suffixes, and root combinations that allow speakers to create new words intuitively. Despite never achieving Zamenhof's dream of becoming a universal second language, Esperanto has developed into a living language with an estimated 100,000 to 2 million speakers worldwide, a rich literature including original works and translations, active online communities, annual international congresses, and even native speakers who learned it as their first language from Esperanto-speaking parents.
