Mongolia, with a land area 7.4 times that of the Korean Peninsula, relies on imports for most agricultural products due to its deserts and harsh climate conditions, with its core industries being minerals and livestock farming and agriculture accounting for only 1% of the economy. In 2012, the Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services implemented a strawberry project in the Gobi Desert. A Korean-style greenhouse was constructed, and Korean-style strawberries are being cultivated there. Currently, 25 varieties of Korean crops are being test-cultivated to suit the local climate (including watermelons, pumpkins, tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers). The Rural Development Administration of Korea's Overseas Agricultural Technology Development Project (KOPIA—providing customized agricultural technology support to developing countries) began in 2009 and currently collaborates with a total of 20 countries: 8 in Asia, 7 in Africa, and 5 in Latin America.
