The University of Basel has calculated that, due to climate change, the water consumption of snow cannons in the Andermatt ski resort could increase from 300 million liters to 500 million liters. At the same time, the demand for water for irrigation, power generation, and drinking water is rising. Will some ski resorts soon run out of water? On the Road with "Mr. Holle" In Lenk, as in many other areas, large-scale artificial snowmaking was necessary again in February. "Einstein" accompanies the head of piste management for a night and shows how 260 snow cannons are controlled and why more and more ski resorts are relying on artificial reservoirs for snowmaking. Artificial Snow Without Electricity: A Success Story Conventional snow cannons need electricity. An invention from Switzerland operates entirely without energy. It's called "Nessy-Zero-E" and isn't a cannon, but a lance. It generates the necessary energy itself using natural water pressure. It is manufactured by a small company in Lucerne. The looming power shortage has boosted business. And the technology is even expected to save glaciers in the future.
