09-13 Toyota Corolla Starter Motor Replacement - Cold Start Noise Simple Easy Way Removal Bolt Nuts
The content of this video is put forth as INFORMATION and ENTERTAINMENT purpose only. Any action you take upon the information on this website is strictly at your own risk. The starter creates high pitch noise (like starter hitting the flywheel) when the weather is cold or if the car has been parked for over 24 hours (cold night). I found out it may be a design defect on OEM starter from Toyota and it may be fine (except the noise) ; however, I really hate that noise; therefore, I decided to buy a Brand New TYC brand (1-19049) starter which has new material and parts are brand new and not re-manufactured/Rebuild parts. To remove the starter, I am using one 14 mm wrench and you do not need to disconnect the radiator, intake hoses from top, or the most important thing - automatic transmission dipstick bracket which is blocking the top Bolt. Even I used a flexible neck ratchet, I still cannot put it in and line up with the bolt. I Do Not want to remove the bracket holding the automatic transmission dipstick is because the auto transmission tube is very easy to bend and it has a Seal at the end and if it starts leaking after I moved or touch it, I may need a new transmission seal. Also, during the installation, if dirt goes into the transmission, I may have to flush the transmission fluid or even changing the transmission filter. I do not want open a can of worms related to transmission while doing a simple bolts removal on starter change. Using only 14 mm to remove top and bottom is totally fine and easy to do. Procedures as follows: 1) Ordered new Starter motor and double change it by compare the looks and then testing it before you remove the old one. (You do not want to find out it looks different or it did not work or partial work or have noise worst than the one you going to replace........etc after you removed the old starter, if this happens, you may have to put back the old starter or wait for the starter to arrive). 2) Remove Battery Negative cable. 3) Remove Top Bolt with 14 mm wrench. (Loose it first) 4) Remove Bottom Bolt with 14 mm wrench. (Loose it first) 5) Remove the one wire Clip by pressing down from top. 6) Use a 12 mm wrench to remove the wire connection with round hole to the starter. 7) While holding the starter, use fingers loosen the Top bolt. 8) While holding the starter, use fingers loosen the Bottom bolt. 9) Use Jack Stands if decided to work from Bottom of the car - SAFETY FIRST - Drop the old starter or pull it up from top. Notes: The Top bolt will still in same position, Drop the starter and leave the top bolt as it stayed. 10) Double check the old starter compare to new starter. validate it has the same looks and same number of teeths / Gears. If not, please double check the model such as CE, LE, XRS or car is made in USA or car is made in Japan...etc). I am not sure why the teeth will be different. Please check with the shop you bought the starter. Installation is the reverse of the above process. 11) Position the new starter and hand tight the bottom bolt. 12) Position the new starter and hand tight the Top Bolt. 13) Hand Tighten all 2 bolts and then use 14 mm wrench to tight the bolt to 28 foot lb (google it to double check, also 28 lbs is not a lot of force - DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN). 14) 28 foot lbs is not a lot of force, therefore, Do Not Over Tighten; otherwise, it will break. 15) Tight a little on top and then a little on bottom and then little on top and then bottom until bolt is 28 foot lb. Please google the torque for your model. 16) Reconnect the one wire connector to the starer. 17) Reconnect the wire connector with a round hole to the starter. 18) Remove Jack Stand. 19) Reconnect back negative cable from starter. 20) Start the Car and test run. (Perfecto - after 2-3 days cold start at night and early morning around 45-55 F, no more cold start noise). Good Luck, You have save at least $500 and the time to have someone bring the car to shop and bring it back from Auto shop. Please like, subscribed and comments.
