Los jeńców wojennych w niewoli niemieckiej (1939-1945). Dr Jan Daniluk
International law had governed the conduct of war and the treatment of prisoners of war since the 19th century. From the perspective of World War II, the Third Geneva Convention, signed on July 27, 1929, was of paramount importance. The Third Reich's policy towards prisoners of war evolved – it was a result of both ideological and economic factors. Those captured were treated differently depending on their nationality. American and British soldiers were held in the best conditions, while Soviet soldiers were in the worst. Italian prisoners, captured in the autumn of 1943, also found themselves in a critical situation. What were conditions like in the camps? How were Polish prisoners of war treated?
