After All Japan's "'81 Inter-Champion Series" at Matsudo Sports Park Gymnasium concluded on April 30, Butcher appeared the following week on May 8 at the Kawasaki City Gymnasium, the opening match of New Japan's "4th MSG Series." The main event of the final match of the series, held at Kuramae Kokugikan on June 24, was Butcher's first match in New Japan. Teaming up with Hansen, Butcher faced Inoki and Yoshiaki Yatsu. This match is famous for the extraordinary treatment Yatsu received, teaming up with Inoki in the main event at Kuramae despite it being his pro debut. He was thoroughly beaten and bloodied by Hansen and Butcher, resulting in a disappointing defeat. However, the fact that this match was Butcher's debut in New Japan is rarely emphasized. In the following "Summer Fight Series," Yatsu teamed up with Bad News Allen and others to face Inoki, Seiji Sakaguchi, Tatsumi Fujinami, Riki Choshu, and Kengo Kimura in consecutive tag team matches. He also faced Sakaguchi and Fujinami in multiple singles matches. However, although he later participated in the Fighting Spirit Series starting on October 9, the card was the same as in the Summer Fight Series, and while he and Inoki competed in tag team matches, they never had a singles match. Their first singles match finally took place on January 28, 1982, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. The match ended with a disqualification victory for Inoki after 14 minutes and 52 seconds, due to an intrusion by Bad News Allen. Just 10 days after Inoki's first singles match against Butcher, a Baba vs. Hansen duel took place at the same Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. This match, a memorable one that marked Baba's "return," was selected as the Match of the Year at the Pro Wrestling Awards that year, but Inoki vs. Butcher was a less-than-famous bout. It was roughly nine months after his first appearance in a New Japan ring that he finally faced off in his first singles match. It's safe to say it was a missed opportunity. Butcher continued to compete in New Japan after that.
