But what purpose was the Obertal Tunnel really intended to serve? Was it designed as a protective shelter, a connecting system, or as a planned escape route from the Obersalzberg? In this documentary, we explore the history of the Obertal Tunnel, examine the few surviving clues, and rely on rare eyewitness accounts. Due to the secrecy surrounding the project at the time, almost no written records still exist. Many details about the true scale of this underground project will therefore likely remain in the dark forever. The importance of the underground facilities became especially clear on April 25, 1945, when the Obersalzberg was attacked by Allied bombers. While heavy destruction unfolded on the surface, around 200 children found shelter inside the Obertal Tunnel and survived the attack unharmed.
