Why must we be fair, even to our enemies? Answers Dr. Georges Kane… Fairness is not a favor bestowed upon another; it is a light kept alive within oneself, a quiet flame that prevents the soul from being lost in darkness. God, the Most High, has illuminated this path, saying: “Let not the hatred of a people incite you to injustice. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.” (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:8) And He also says: “O you who have believed, stand firm in justice, witnesses for God, even if it be against yourselves or parents or relatives.” (Surah An-Nisa’, 4:135) In the divine balance, justice knows neither preference nor exclusion. She yields neither to love nor to hate, but remains upright, unchanging, like an axis around which human dignity revolves. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Fear injustice, for injustice will be darkness on the Day of Resurrection.” (Reported by Muslim)
