ASPEN ALBUM Dick Durrance Ski Film 1966
Dick Durrance, "The Man on The Medal" was a 17-time national championship alpine ski racer and one of the first Americans to compete successfully against Europeans. World War II interrupted international ski racing. Dick was hired to save the languishing Alta ski area, including finishing and operating the Alta Lodge. He pioneered skiing Alta's canyon walls, developing his patented "Dipsy Doodle" turn to gracefully ski the steeps. In 1947, Durrance was hired to manage the Aspen Skiing Company. The struggling company was turned around by Durrance, who brought the 1950 World Championships to Aspen, the first held outside of Europe. It put Aspen on the map and it is now one of the most popular ski resorts in the United States. He also produced a number of ski films with his wife Miggs and devoted most of his life to the promotion of skiing. Aspen Album is Dick's 1966 promotional film for the Aspen Skiing Company that acquaints the viewer with a history of Aspen from the 1880s to the 1960s. Dick shot most of the footage himself over the previous two decades. His son Dave contributed the film to the GrassRoots Community Archive after Dick passed in 2004. "If You Want to Know Aspen, You Have to Watch GrassRoots." GrassRoots TV programming is entirely funded by members of the Roaring Fork Valley community, and by grants from the City of Aspen Community Non-Profit Grant Program, Pitkin County Healthy Community Fund, The Town of Snowmass Village and The Aspen Thrift Shop.
