Hanazawa no Sato is a peaceful mountain hamlet nestled just above the Yaizu side of the Shin-Nihonzaka Tunnel on the Tomei Expressway. Although it lies only a short distance from the coast, the village feels worlds away, with its old stone walls, moss-covered paths, and a tranquil atmosphere where time seems to stand still. Following the historic stone walls and climbing through the lush forest, you’ll reach the ruins of Hanazawa Castle, a site that still carries traces of Japan’s Sengoku era. This was once a defensive outpost where Imagawa Ujizane prepared to protect Suruga against Takeda Shingen. Walking these historic paths lets you imagine what it must have been like more than 450 years ago. Whether you visit on a sunny day or during a gentle rain in the rainy season, the scenery has its own charm.
