Cobra's Fang

Ok It's winter but what better way to escape than a classic tropical cocktail? To understand the allure of Tiki, you have to consider where America was at the time it emerged. Movements emerge as a reaction to external events, and these movements serve a critical societal function. At the time of tiki’s ascendency the country was still trying to dig it's way out of the Great Depression, the end of Prohibition was a recent memory and America needed a fun distraction. Enter Don The Beachcomber with his Tropical oasis of a restaurant where one could go get lost in paradise for a few hours. Genius if you ask me. The Cobra's Fang cocktail was most probably invented by Donn Beach around 1937, that's the recipe we're using here. It was placed on many many of Donn Beach's Menu and was in a group of cocktails including the Shark's Tooth and Nelson's Blood which were designed to evoke a sense of Adventure and Danger critical to the aesthetic of Beach's restaurants. There are recipes which include Fassionola Syrup which some feel critical to the drink, this early recipe doesn't include it. It also bears mentioning that later versions of the drink were served in a tall curved glass and had a long lime peel fashioned to resemble a snake as part of the garnish. Alrighty-poo that's all I got for ya! Go make this drink and add a little paradise to your fall or enjoy the beginning of your summer (for those of you below the equator) with this drink!
