Broadway Review: WAITING FOR GODOT - Bored and Confused?
Welcome to Bored and Confused - and this is going to be a long, unscripted therapy session about Jamie Lloyd's production of Waiting for Godot starring Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter at the Hudson Theatre. Fair warning: I have a LOT of feelings about this one, and not in a good way. This classic Samuel Beckett play requires vaudeville clowns who can handle the absurdist dialogue and make it entertaining. Previous Broadway productions featured powerhouse comic actors like Nathan Lane, Bill Irwin, Steve Martin, Robin Williams, Ian McKellen, and Patrick Stewart. Keanu and Alex have big boots to fill - pun very much intended since Gogo's boots don't fit well. ⏰ TIMESTAMPS: 00:57 - Why I'm going unscripted: Too many feelings about this one 01:50 - Previous productions: The comedic actors this play requires 02:59 - Cast overview and the striking tube set design 04:27 - What worked: Costumes and stage pictures 06:09 - The cheap Bill & Ted reference laughs 07:15 - Why mediocre performances don't cut it for this play 08:09 - Brandon Jay Durden shines as Pozzo despite confusing staging 08:57 - The wheelchair casting choice that made no sense 11:23 - The deafening pre-show music that set a bad tone 12:46 - Keanu as a blank slate surrounded by better actors 15:08 - Why I almost left at intermission 17:06 - Final thoughts: Skip this, watch the archives instead Jamie Lloyd's directorial choices left me baffled - from the giant wooden tube set to pantomiming all props to casting choices that fought against the text. The one bright spot is Brandon J Dirden as Pozzo, who deserves to be in a better production of this play. This review is raw, unfiltered, and longer than usual because I needed to process what I just experienced. If you made it this far, thanks for being my therapist.
