South Park: The Stick Of Truth - Part 3: Day Three

00:06:03 - Forging Alliances/Pose as Bebe's Boyfriend 00:22:15 - Unplanned Parenthood 00:57:06 - Heading North/O Canada 01:38:54 - Clyde's Fortress 02:26:25 - Betrayal From Within South Park differs from other animated comedy series such as The Simpsons, Family Guy or American Dad in the way that it has somehow managed to remain funny after 29 years, whilst the others have noticeably declined in quality and run out of steam. This is due to their rapid turnaround allowing them to lampoon anything and anyone, literally nobody is safe and Matt Stone and Trey Parker do not give a single metric fuck about who they offend. It is equal parts gross-out humour and satirical social commentary, and is much more intelligent and well-written than what's on the surface would lead you to believe. Prior to 2014, South Park didn't really have a game which was able to properly capture the essence and spirit of the much-loved TV show and this led to the creators declining several offers - but The Stick Of Truth changed things as it would be the first time they would be actively involved. Matt and Trey worked with Obsidian to produce a RPG that feels like you are in an actual episode of South Park. In it, you play as a customisable silent protagonist child who has recently moved to the Colorado Mountain town. He befriends the children of South Park who are divided as they play humans (led by Cartman) vs Elves (led by Kyle) - and over the course of three days, chaos breaks out over town after a UFO crash-lands and the US Government get involved. The game is jampacked full of references to older episodes and you can befriend all your favourite locals on Facebook by meeting them or carrying out side quests for them. The more friends you have, the more perks you can unlock. Both the main story and side quests have been written with care, and (as I explained above) it doesn't feel like it's a licensed game for the sake of sales - This was clearly a passion project for everybody on board with its development. The game constantly uses the fearless humour from the show, and was subject to censorship thanks to PEGI and the ACB - Matt and Trey decided to include cards which explained the scenes in a humourous way. Now, I have played the game both censored and uncensored - and this is actually funnier than some of the minigames (and their badly explained tutorials). Exploration of the town is really fun and your favourite areas are here in 2.5D - and you have reason to revisit every area as abilities you learn throughout the game (such as more powerful fart magic, shrinking to gnome size or teleportation) will allow you to explore every previously inaccessible nook and cranny as you search for collectibles, equipment or friends. You'll also be with a buddy, who has their own set of abilities - such as Butters healing, or Jimmy's disabled access - which will assist in many overworld situations. Combat takes the concept of classic turn based RPGs, as you can customise all weapons and armour to inflict additional damage or debuffs like gross out (poison), fire or bleeding. Early in the game you will also pick a class that has an effect on both dialogue and special abilities (either Thief, Mage, Warrior or... Jew) - and you can level up your abilities per preference as you gain EXP, but sadly there isn't too much difference in each class to encourage replayability. Each of your buddies have their own abilities that will be recognisable to fans and will have you laughing. Compared to most RPGs, the combat is extremely simplistic and I fear that it would have gotten stale if the game went much further beyond it's 10-12 hour length.
