How to Pass B2 English Test (ISE 2) - Writing
The Trinity College London ISE II (Integrated Skills in English) is a B2-level qualification divided into two independent modules. Here is the detailed breakdown of the time allocations and assessment methods for each section. Module 1: Speaking and Listening Total Time: 18 Minutes Method: A one-on-one spoken assessment conducted live with a Trinity examiner, either face-to-face or via video conference. This module is divided into four consecutive tasks: Task 1: Topic Task (4 minutes) Method: The candidate prepares a topic of their choice before the exam. During the assessment, they present this topic and engage in a discussion about it with the examiner. The candidate is expected to demonstrate specific B2 language functions, such as highlighting advantages and disadvantages or expressing tentative opinions. Task 2: Collaborative Task (4 minutes) Method: The examiner reads a short prompt detailing a dilemma or opinion. The candidate must take the lead, asking the examiner questions to find out more information, maintaining the flow of the conversation, and eventually offering advice or an opinion. Task 3: Conversation Task (2 minutes) Method: A natural, two-way exchange where the examiner selects one subject area from a prescribed list (e.g., society and living standards, personal values and ideals, or the world of work) to discuss with the candidate. Task 4: Independent Listening Task (8 minutes) Method: The candidate listens to an audio recording twice. First Listen: The candidate must listen and then verbally report the main idea and overall message of the recording to the examiner. Second Listen: The candidate listens again, takes notes if they wish, and verbally reports specific details and facts from the recording. The examiner will then ask follow-up questions to elicit further details. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Module 2: Reading and Writing Total Time: 2 Hours Method: Written examination, which can be taken either as a paper-based or computer-based test under traditional exam conditions. This module consists of four distinct tasks: Task 1: Long Reading Method: The candidate reads a single comprehensive text (approximately 500 words) and answers 15 questions. These questions test reading comprehension, including finding factual information and understanding the writer's purpose. Task 2: Multi-text Reading Method: The candidate reads four shorter, related texts (totaling about 500 words) and answers 15 questions. This assesses the ability to synthesize information across different sources. Task 3: Reading into Writing Method: The candidate must write a response (150–180 words) such as an article, letter, email, or report, using only the information provided in the four texts from Task 2. Task 4: Extended Writing Method: The candidate responds to a standalone prompt by writing an essay, article, letter, email, or review (150–180 words). This tests their ability to express opinions, explain advantages/disadvantages, and develop a structured argument.
