High in the Ouro Branco massif, far from the mansions of the villages, lie ruins that reveal the deeper side of the Estrada Real (Royal Road). These are remnants of slave quarters and lookout posts built of rough stonework. Unlike the urban slave quarters, these isolated structures in the mountains served to support mining activities and control the flow of goods.
