Bewegung als Medikament: Die unterschätzte Waffe gegen Krebs | Prof. Freerk Baumann #70
In this episode, I speak with Prof. Freerk Baumann, head of the Exercise Medicine working group at the Center for Integrated Oncology at the University Hospital of Cologne and coordinator of the S3 guideline on exercise therapy. In Germany, we spend billions on state-of-the-art cancer therapies, yet we often ignore one of the most effective measures, which costs us almost nothing: exercise. In Germany alone, we could prevent 30,000 new cases of cancer each year through regular physical activity. However, the majority of people in Germany don't even meet the minimum recommendations of the WHO. In this episode, we debunk the outdated advice to "take it easy" and explain why exercise must now be an integral part of oncology. In this episode, you'll learn: 💪🏻 Why exercise plays a much bigger role in cancer prevention and treatment than many people realize 🧬 How physical activity influences the immune system and can, among other things, help to better recognize and fight tumor cells 🏋🏻 Why targeted strength training is so important for preserving muscle mass, function, and metabolism in cases of cachexia 🏥 Why exercise ideally shouldn't begin only after therapy, but should be part of the treatment plan as soon as possible, ideally right from diagnosis Modern Medicine thrives on the support of the people who listen to this podcast.
