Grown in the pristine tidal flats, Sinan octopuses have long been popular as a health food, known for their tender flesh and a sweet taste that intensifies with every bite, selling out like hotcakes. For this reason, they have long been referred to as "gold" by local residents and are considered a grateful asset that guarantees their income. Among them is a man who has been catching octopuses using the traditional "garae" (a type of shovel) for over 30 years. He is Mr. Kim Sang-muk, who lives on Aphaedo Island. He goes out at dawn to wait for the tide to recede, and once the tidal flats are exposed, the octopus fishing begins in earnest. Mr. Kim Sang-muk is said to catch octopuses in the mudflats with uncanny skill. His method involves locating the octopuses' breathing holes—known as "burots"—in the mudflats where it is difficult even to walk, and then digging into the mud with a specialized shovel called a "garae" to catch them before they can escape. Since this work requires considerable skill and physical strength, most people who practice this "garae-jabbi" (shovel-catching) in Aphaedo, Sinan, boast decades of experience. Meanwhile, Mr. Kim Young-min, a young octopus fisherman living on Seondo in the same Sinan region, reportedly returned to fishing at the age of 29 after working in the service industry. He says he came back to Seondo because he found city life, where he was constantly jostled by people, too burdensome. He catches them by attaching small imported freshwater crabs, which octopuses like, to his longlines. Longline fishing is a method where one goes out to sea alone at night to time the activity of the nocturnal octopuses, casting and retrieving a longline rigged with bait. Because it allows one to catch octopuses in a short amount of time without requiring special skills, it is a popular fishing method among young people. Mr. Kim Young-min also says that while he used to be afraid to go out to sea alone at night, now that he has become a full-fledged octopus fisherman, he enjoys the tranquil atmosphere of the night sea. Since Sinan is so famous for its abundant octopuses, a street specializing in octopus cuisine has even sprung up, where you can taste a variety of octopus dishes such as chopped octopus, Yeonpotang, and grilled octopus skewers.
