One of South Africa's Most Loved Mountain Passes
Welcome to the Tradouw Pass, one of South Africa's most spectacular & loved mountain passes. Carved through a dramatic mountain gorge, the pass carries the R324 and has provided a vital link between the coast and the interior for more than 150 years Nestled between the small towns of Suurbrak and Barrydale in the Western Cape, the pass winds its way through a landscape carved over millions of years by the Tradouw River. The name "Tradouw" is believed to come from a Khoi word meaning "women's path", a reminder that this landscape has a story stretching back long before the arrival of modern roads Completed in 1873 under the guidance of renowned road engineer Thomas Bain, the pass remains one of his finest achievements. With sheer rock faces towering above, rugged slopes and the river flowing below, every turn reveals a new perspective of this remarkable landscape Stretching for around 16 kilometres between Suurbrak and Barrydale, the Tradouw Pass can be driven in less than 20 minutes but with scenery like this - most visitors find themselves taking a little longer. Between the rock formations, mountain vistas, the river gorge and countless photo opportunities, it's easy to spend 30 to 60 minutes exploring the pass The pass serves as a gateway between the Overberg and the Klein Karoo. While not technically part of Route 62, it connects directly to the famous touring route, at Barrydale and is considered one of the region's most rewarding drives. Whether you're heading towards the Klein Karoo or travelling south towards Swellendam and the coast, this is a stretch of road that rewards those who slow down, smell the flowers and take it all in Stay at The Karoo Art Hotel, grab a bite at In Paradise (Suurbraak) and grab a milkshake at Diesel & Créme. If you're staying at the Karoo Art Hotel and happen to meet the owners, be warned that Rick may invite you to join the Barrydale Swimming Club. It's perhaps a little less challenging in summer than in winter, unless you're a budding Lewis Pugh Beyond the engineering and scenery, there's something special about places like this. They remind us that South Africa's beauty is often found between the destinations, in the mountain passes, quiet roads and small towns that connect them If you've travelled the Tradouw Pass before, let us know your favourite memory in the comments below This is Small Town South Africa, celebrating the people, places and stories that make our country special Until next time, travel safely and keep exploring
