Canyoning in Italy - Rio Simon, Roveredo, Udine, Friuli

A very beautiful and impressive canyon located in the little village of Roveredo, Udine, a few kilometers east of Tolmezzo. This deep and occasionally very narrow canyon offers a large variety of gorgeous abseils and jumps into clean and deep pools. An upper part to this canyon also exists, however according to other descriptions it is not really worth the extra effort. Parking: 46°23'47.2"N 13°15'25.5"E (a parking lot on the eastern end of the village) Ascent: Hike west over the road. Just before the road turns north towards the bridge over the Rio Brezzi, a small path leads uphill. Some white markings with blue dots are visible on occasion. There are multiple possibilities from here, and they should all work, as long as you don't cross the Rio Brezzi. Either take the more bushwacky western path (blue dots), or the slightly longer eastern path towards route 424 that runs east - west. Once you reach this path follow it east and continue north past the ruins until you reach the junction with the iron crosses pictured in the video. Follow the right path, and after a few more minutes, again turn right and follow the path down (also displayed in the video) until you reach the canyon. (Ca. 2 - 2,5 hours at a leisurely pace) Descent: A large variety of rappels and jumps, with a decent amount of water. However, most anchors are placed far (sometimes too far) outside of the water. (Ca. 4 - 5,5 hours) The way back: You end up at the bridge over the Rio Simon. Follow the road back west towards Roveredo.
