VW Phaeton 3D How to Replace Front Lower Control Arm

Changing the front lower control arms (front straight arm and rear curved arm) on an Audi A6 C5 is a straightforward job, but there are two critical steps that often ruin new ball joints and bushings if overlooked. The C5 front suspension uses two lower control arms per side: • Front Lower Control Arm (Straight): Holds the base of the strut/shock absorber and connects to the sway bar link. • Rear Lower Control Arm (Curved): Holds the lower rear of the steering knuckle and connects to the sway bar. Required Tools • Socket and spanner set (mainly 16 mm, 18 mm, 19 mm). • Penetrating fluid / WD-40. • Ball joint separator (pickle fork or screw-type separator). • Hydraulic jack (to load the suspension). • Torque wrench. Step-by-Step Procedure 1. Preparation & Safety Loosen the wheel bolts, raise the car safely, support it on jack stands, and remove the wheel. Generously spray all bolts and ball joint studs with penetrating fluid. 1. Disconnect Sway Bar Link & Strut Fork (Straight Arm) If you are replacing the front straight arm: Remove the bottom bolt securing the shock absorber fork to the arm (18 mm). Disconnect the sway bar link from the control arm. 1. Separate Ball Joint from Steering Knuckle Remove the ball joint nut at the knuckle (typically 18 mm or 19 mm). Use a ball joint separator to pop the taper loose from the knuckle. Caution: Do not strike the aluminum knuckle directly with a heavy hammer to avoid cracking it. 1. Remove Inner Subframe Bolt Unbolt the inner pivot bolt connecting the arm to the subframe. Slide out the old arm and clean any rust or debris from the knuckle's taper seat. 1. Installation & CRITICAL Ride-Height Torquing Fit the new arm and thread all bolts hand-tight only (do not fully torque them yet!).
