MELAKA in 24 hours! Part 3 - Satay Celup & Asam Pedas
I've come to the city of Melaka, famous for its rich culture and history first as a Malay sultanate and then an important trading port under Portugese rule. Modern Melaka is also the centre of Peranakan culture in Malaysia, who are the descendents of Chinese immigrants to Malaysia from hundreds of years ago who have developed their own unique culture, as well as language and cuisine. Understanding the Peranakan culture and tasting Perankan food is why I've come to Melaka, and while I know nothing about them, lucky for me I have my a local Perankan friend to help me out! In Part 3, Vivian takes me to an institution in Melaka’s culinary scene, Restoran Ban Lee Siang, to try out satay celup. Similar to lok lok, this cooking style involves dipping skewers into a hotpot of soup, but unlike lok lok this soup is full of satay sauce! Then later, I sneak out of the hostel past midnight to join the locals on the streets of Melaka, in search of the best late night snacks in town!
