O que aconteceu com o GIRAFFAS?

But behind this impression of decline, the Brazilian chain has just reached a historic milestone: R$ 1 billion in annual revenue, the highest result in its history. In this episode of Empresas da Bolsa (Companies on the Stock Exchange), Duda Seixo shows how a company that seemed off the radar managed to survive crises, strategic errors, and profound changes in Brazilian consumption. The story of Giraffas begins in BrasĂlia in the 1980s, with a small snack bar, a name inspired by giraffes at the zoo, and an almost artisanal operation. What seemed like a simple business soon turned into a survival test: lack of employees, inflation, shortages, and a heavy routine forced the founders to learn in practice what it means to manage a food company in Brazil. The major turning point came when Giraffas decided to adopt the franchise model and create a different proposition from American chains: Brazilian fast food. While hamburgers dominated food courts, the brand bet on rice, beans, salad, and meat served quickly, creating a unique positioning in the Brazilian food market and among franchises. But rapid growth also comes at a price. The video shows how the vertical integration of operations, the end of easy profits from financial float after the Real Plan, and the difficulty of sustaining an expensive structure led Giraffas to bankruptcy protection. Later, expansion into the United States revealed another classic business mistake: trying to appear too big in a market the company did not yet dominate. The pandemic brought another shock. With a large portion of its stores located in shopping malls and airports, the chain saw its revenue plummet and also faced a reputation crisis on social media. The answer came with street-level stores, containers, delivery, digitalization, and an operation more adapted to the new consumer behavior, showing how companies survive when they manage to cut costs, reposition channels, and accept market realities.
