What Mormons Don’t Seem To Understand About “Sola Scriptura”

Is "Sola Scriptura" a justifiable doctrine? A lot of Latter-day Saints claim that sola scriptura, or "scripture alone," is an absurd doctrine. Sola scriptura claims that scripture alone is the sole infallible verbal authority for the Church. Critics will point out that Scripture never actually says it's the final authority, and so the doctrine is seemingly self-defeating. And yet – it remains one of the fundamental claims of Protestantism. Mormonism's objections to sola scriptura often revolve around questions like these: "Did Scripture ever say the canon is closed? Doesn’t a closed canon require another authority? Where does the Bible say it’s the sole authority for the church? There are blatant errors in the Bible, it can’t be the sole authority! What use is an authoritative text if we have no authoritative interpreter?" There are some good questions in here, mixed with several misunderstandings. In this video, I’m going to explain the doctrine of sola scriptura: what it is, what it isn’t, and why I think it’s not just reasonable to hold this doctrine, but essential. If Scripture really is the very “Word of God,” then it stands unique in our world. God is not a man, that He should lie. He is perfect, and thus His Word is perfect (and powerful). In John 10, Jesus says “The sheep hear [The Good Shepherd’s] voice … the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” (John 10:3-5).
