Why Japan Never Forgot What Nimitz Did After Their Surrender
On September 1st, 1945 — the day before Japan surrendered — Admiral Chester Nimitz walked alone through the ruins of Yokosuka naval base. He stopped in front of a decaying Japanese battleship that the Soviet Union demanded be destroyed forever. The ship was the Mikasa — flagship of Admiral Heihachiro Togo, the man who had crushed the Russian fleet at Tsushima in 1905. Nimitz gave one quiet order: “Post American Marines on her deck. No one touches this ship.” Eighty years later, that ship is still there. Every May 27th, American and Japanese sailors stand together on her deck and remember their dead — together. This is the story of why. From a 20-year-old midshipman shaking Togo’s hand in a Tokyo garden in 1905… to the day Nimitz saved Togo’s flagship after destroying Japan’s entire navy… to the Japanese people who later built a garden for Nimitz in his Texas hometown — this is the most beautiful, most human story of the Pacific War. A story of victory without hatred. Of a man who knew exactly when to stop fighting and how to honor a worthy enemy. Of the quiet greatness that truly defines the Greatest Generation. If you had a father or grandfather who served in the Pacific — on a carrier, a submarine, a beach, or a ship — this one is for him. 👉 Like to honor the men who knew how to win… and how to make peace 🔔 Subscribe for the final chapter of this unforgettable WWII series #NimitzMikasa #AdmiralNimitz #GreatestGenerationWW2 Stories Archive is dedicated to preserving the true history of World War II and honoring the courage of the Greatest Generation 🇺🇸.
