Barry Long - The universe has no past
Barry Long reveals in this talk, some of the mysteries of the universe. He challenges conventional understandings of reality, urging the listener to engage not with inherited beliefs or intellectual concepts but with direct experience. Barry examines the modes of intelligence, distinguishing between mere informational memory and a deeper, immediate knowledge that transcends time. At the core of this talk is the idea that the human mind, which identifies with movement and sensory experience is incapable of perceiving the truth—whereas intelligence, in its highest form, is still and unwavering and can perceive the true state of the universe. He also addresses the fundamental realities of God, the universe, and I. The universe is not an evolving entity with a past but an immediate, unchanging effect of an unknowable cause—God. 'I' is not merely a part of the universe but the point of intelligence within it, responsible for discerning truth from illusion. This talk invites the listener to look beyond intellectual constructs and conditioned beliefs, toward an unshakable intelligence that does not waver, worry, or depend on external authority. It is a call to personal responsibility in the pursuit of truth—one that requires the courage to go beyond movement, beyond attachment, and beyond thought itself. Extracts from this talk: 'Only in the whole is there no movement, and only in the whole is there now. Now is the whole. So everything moves because we with our particular sense perception, only see parts, and then we see in the mirror of the parts that we see, we see the waveringness of our own intelligence, unable to hold to anything for long. Whereas God, that which is behind the universe, holds everything together, absolutely, every moment, unchanging because of its an unwavering, whatever it is you can't describe it, but it doesn't move. It doesn't waver, not like our minds and emotions move here, not like our sense perception moves here, not like our memory moves here. So although we're at a part of the universe, each one of us, each one is the center of the universe.'
