The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people." - Richard Foster (Celebration of Discipline) 7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:7,8 (NIV) Let me highlight three reasons why spiritual disciplines are important: 1. Jesus modeled them The number one reason these exercises are important is also the most compelling! The Lord Jesus Christ was the only perfect person ever to live, and still he practiced spiritual disciplines. 2. Abiding in Christ is not a Passive Activity In John 15, the Lord Jesus uses the metaphor of the vine and the branches! The Lord Jesus reminds us “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). 3. Disciplines help us understand “true spirituality” No one coasts into Christ-likeness. Any progress in godliness requires Spirit-filled effort and purpose.” Donald S. Whitney How do we avoid the danger of legalism? 1) We must recognize the purpose of the spiritual disciplines: Remember Foster's image of the path: "the path does not produce change; it only places us where the change can occur." 2) Remember that change is God's work, not ours. We cannot change ourselves / will power alone cannot help us to change! Again, Foster's words are helpful: The spiritual disciplines are, "a means of receiving God's grace.…[They] allow us to place ourselves before God so he can transform us."
