However, when an adaptation or replacement is made, it is also possible to use different keys. However, the keys are not always compatible with the drive system, with the negative rest needed to perform the polarity inversion required by the motor. In this case, this must be done with the help of relays, and we'll discuss this now. First, why would it be necessary to replace a car's window switches? There are two main reasons: the original car key can no longer be found for a replacement, or the customer intentionally wants to install a more robust and durable key. This second option is more common. More and more people are taking up off-roading and using 4x4 SUVs from the 1990s. These trucks had factory power windows, but excessive moisture and mud have damaged the original window switches, forcing owners to choose more durable switches without much regard for the key's appearance. It doesn't need to be pretty; it has to work and last. Most of the time, these are metal lever switches with only three connection pins: one common central pin and two lateral ones that contact the central pin as the key is moved to each side. This system can't provide the polarity inversion the motor needs to move it in both directions, so it requires the help of two 5-pin relays. Each relay supplies a negative signal to each of the motor's wires. When it receives the signal from the key, the relay changes its negative signal to positive, while the other relay maintains the negative signal. The same happens with the other relay, allowing for the polarity inversion the motor needs. This system also works for other applications where a motor needs to rotate in both directions.
