Der Geher in Hamburg: Wittmoor

I am Der Geher and today I am exploring the Wittmoor nature reserve. The trail starts at Siegfriedstraße and leads south along Wittmoorredder. A view of the central area of the moor with a lake and, on the other side of the reserve, along the city limits. The trail ends in a open forest near Duvenstedt. Wittmoor was used for peat extraction for a long time. Today, hiking trails lead over the dams of the former tramway. However, there are also traces of boardwalks. The oldest dates back to around 330 AD. Peat extraction ceased in 1958 and the area became a nature reserve in 1978. Today, it has been dammed up again and renaturalized.
