800 Years of HISTORY... 10 Seconds of CHAOS! (Caballos del Vino)
800 years of tradition, 10 seconds of chaos. / 800 años de historia, 10 segundos de caos. Welcome to the Caballos del Vino in Caravaca de la Cruz! 200,000 spectators. And a race that’s over in just 10 seconds. Welcome to the Caballos del Vino (Running of the Wine Horses) in Caravaca de la Cruz, Murcia 🇪🇸. This isn’t just a horse race—it’s a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event where horses adorned in hand-embroidered silk and gold mantles sprint up a 80m hill, surrounded by a sea of people. We traveled to Caravaca de la Cruz to see the real story behind the legend of the 13th-century wine runners. In this video, you'll see: ✅ The incredible hand-embroidered mantles (valued at thousands of Euros!) ✅ The "Evening Spectacle" of the Entrada de Moros ✅ The heart-pounding 10-second sprint to the castle ✅ Our "honest reality" take: Is the crowd too much, or is it worth the trip? Castle Hill Crowd: While the total city attendance reached 200,000, the specific race area on the Cuesta del Castillo (Castle Hill) was described as "packed to bursting," with thousands of spectators forming a dense human corridor that opens only seconds before each horse passes. If we can do it, you can too! The attackers poisoned or cut off the castle's water supply. People were dying. A group of knights broke through the enemy lines on horseback, desperate to find clean water. They found none — but they found wine. They loaded it into skins, strapped them to their horses, and charged back up the steep hill at full gallop, smashing through the Moorish barricades to reach the castle. Inside, the wine was blessed with the True Cross of Caravaca — the Vera Cruz. When the sick drank it, they miraculously recovered. The blessed wine was poured into the poisoned cisterns, purifying the water. The castle held. Every May 2nd, that desperate 80-metre gallop up Castle Hill is re-run by the Peñas Caballistas — the brotherhoods — their horses wearing magnificent hand-embroidered mantles of silk, gold and silver thread. Four handlers must run alongside and hold on for the entire sprint. One hand lets go — disqualified. Ten seconds. Eight hundred years of history. #CaballosDelVino #CaravacaDeLaCruz #SpanishFestivals #LivingInSpain #Murcia #GetMeToSpain #CostaBlanca #VisitSpain We’re Neil and Sue – an ordinary UK couple now living in Ciudad Quesada on the Costa Blanca, Spain.
