A sixteen-year-old produce clerk in Cleveland, earning four hundred dollars a year, somehow accumulated the capital to enter oil refining within seven years, dominate it within a decade, and become the wealthiest individual in human history within a lifetime. Every American university, hospital, and foundation that bears his family’s name was built on the back of that fortune. What none of them have ever managed to explain is where the starting capital actually came from. The arithmetic does not work. The records that would tell us are missing. And the official version of events has been quietly maintained for over a century by the institutions the fortune funded.
