Moirang Phee is a traditional handwoven fabric from Manipur, India, deeply intertwined with Meitei mythology and royal history. It is distinguished by its iconic Pheejin (or Yarongphi) border—a zigzag, triangular pattern that symbolizes the teeth of the mythical python god, Pakhangba. The fabric's history dates back to the 12th century. According to the ancient royal manuscript Loiyumba Silyen, King Meidingu Loiyumba (1074–1122) assigned the weavers of Moirang village (located in the Bishnupur district) to weave this special fabric as a tribute to the Manipuri royals. The region is historically linked to the tragic romance of Khamba and Thoibi from the epic Moirang Kangleirol, further cementing its cultural significance. In Manipuri mythology, the python god is a revered guardian deity. The sharp edge of the triangle is believed to offer spiritual protection and strength to the wearer. It is traditionally handwoven by Meitei women using natural cotton and mulberry silk. The fibers are extracted from local cotton balls (lashing) and tree bark (santhak). Weaving a single garment is highly intricate and often requires two skilled artisans to complete. It utilizes the extra weft technique and interlocking methods to achieve the sharp, sequential temple borders. Historically, Moirang Phee was worn only during ceremonies and matrimonial rituals, but it has evolved into a staple for saris, innaphi (wrap), and phanek (sarong).
