How to Pick a Sweet Honeydew Melon... The Farmer's Trick
#FoodTips #ProduceTips #Homesteading It is the middle of August, and the grocery store bins are piled high with honeydew melons. You pick one up, turn it over, and put it back because they all look exactly the same—smooth, pale green, and mysterious. You gamble on the biggest one, bring it home, and cut it open to find pale, watery, flavorless flesh. Seven dollars on the counter, half of it headed for the compost bin because nobody wants a second bite. There is no luck in picking a honeydew. Every farm wife in this country once knew how to walk up to a pile and pick the sweetest one every single time. Unlike watermelons or cantaloupes, a honeydew doesn't "shout" its ripeness; it whispers. In this video, I walk you through the five traditional tests to read exactly what the melon is telling you before you ever put it in your cart: 1. The Color Test — A ripe honeydew isn't bright green. Look for a creamy, buttery, ivory-white rind with a faint yellow undertone—the color of old cream. Bright green melons were picked too early and will never develop sweetness on your counter. 2. The Waxy Slip — Run your palm across the rind. A ripe melon feels subtly waxy or velvety, like a smooth river stone. An unripe melon feels rough, dry, and chalky to the touch. 3. The Stem End "Give" — Press your thumb gently against the stem end. You are looking for a small, quiet give—a slight softness that signals the vine naturally loosened its connection as the fruit reached peak maturity. If it’s hard as a rock, the vine was still actively feeding it when it was cut. 4. The Weight Comparison — Hold two melons of similar size in your hands. The heavier one is the better one. Ripe honeydews are packed dense with water and sugars, whereas light or "hollow-feeling" melons have started to dry out or never fully developed. 5. The Blossom End Smell — This is the most important test. Press your nose against the round blossom end (opposite the stem) and take a deep breath. A ripe honeydew has a soft, sweet, floral, honeyed fragrance. If it smells like nothing at all, it will taste like nothing at all—and no amount of time on your kitchen counter will fix that. I am Amish, and I will be honest with you—a honeydew melon never gets sweeter after it leaves the vine. What you buy is what you get. Supermarkets don't teach you these tests because if every shopper checked the blossom end for fragrance, half their inventory would sit in the bin until it rotted. Running these five tests takes under two minutes, and it ensures that every dollar you spend buys you a sweet, juicy harvest instead of disappointment. Tell me in the comments — which of these five tests had you never heard of before? The wax test? The smell? And if your grandmother had her own family trick for picking melons at the market, share it below. I read every single one.
