According to its 2026 annual report, the Sweden-based international defense research organization Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has stated that India has, for the first time in its history, deployed 12 nuclear warheads in a launch-ready state. Traditionally, India's long-standing practice during peacetime has been to store nuclear warheads and the missiles designed to deliver them separately at designated facilities. However, the new report suggests a shift from this approach, indicating that these warheads have now been deployed in a manner that would enable an immediate retaliatory response in the event of any emergency situation.
