Park City, Utah - for No Reason !

I wrapped up FanX in Salt Lake City, found myself with an extra day, and thought — why not just head up to Park City, Utah for no reason at all? Along with a couple of friends, what was supposed to be a spontaneous detour became one of my favorite Randomland episodes to date. We got lucky: we met Jeff Shelburg and his famous owl, Hoot — not your average owl. Hoot’s on the big screen more times than most human actors — with over 100 Hollywood film credits, including appearances in the Harry Potter series — and has hung with stars like Robin Williams, Matt Damon, Kevin Costner, Kyra Sedgwick, and many more. He’s even made appearances at Sundance, mingling with festival crowds and celebrities. From there we dove into the Park City Museum, where you get this fascinating blend of 19th-century silver mining heritage and stories of how this rough-and-tumble town evolved. You’ll see the old mine exhibits, vintage photographic displays, and original artifacts from when Park City was one of the richest silver mining towns in Utah. Of course, Park City today is famous not just for its mining past — it hosted events in the 2002 Winter Olympics, and is home to world-class ski resorts, a vibrant Sundance Film Festival, and a historic Main Street lined with galleries, boutique shops, and nostalgia. As we walked, you could feel the weight of all those layers: mining boomtown → Olympic host → indie film Mecca. The owl photos, the museum deep dive, the mountain-town charm — it all came together in a random side-trip that turned into a highlight before we drove back to Salt Lake, caught our flight, and headed home to Orange County.
